Obituary for Bettie Ruth Montague

Bettie Ruth Montague, daughter of the late William Dunn and Lena McCormick Dunn was born June 22, 1925 in Little River Township, North Carolina. After bravely battling an ongoing illness, she departed this life on July 14, 2020 at Mountainside Hospital in Montclair, NJ. She attended the public schools of Wake County and graduated from Duboise High School, Rolesville, NC.

On June 23, 1944, in Dillon, SC, she was united in holy matrimony to Louis Montague, who preceded her in death after almost 42 years of marriage on June 8, 1986. In 1964, God Blessed Bettie and the late Louis Montague to become foster parents to two little girls Shirley Cutler and Natalie McClinton.

Bettie Ruth, as she was affectionately called and her late husband relocated to East Orange, NJ and in1957 she became a lifelong and active member of Calvary Baptist Church which was under the leadership of Reverend William R. Bailey. She served on the Usher Board and also was a member of the Missionary Ministry. In addition, she also served alongside Mother Ida Walker and other members in the church kitchen, cooking and serving food. She was famous for her sweet potato pies and they were in high demand during church bake sales. She also supported church fashion shows working alongside Ms. Muriel Crenshaw in the Fellowship Hall of Calvary. She participated and organized various political events during the 1970’s for Former Mayor William Hart. She also served as Grand Matron to the Queen of Sheba Grand Chapter, Newark, NJ. Bettie Ruth was employed by Singer of Elizabeth, NJ, retiring to become a fulltime homemaker to her husband and daughters. She loved her family with all that she had and in return was loved by many. She loved children. She babysat for many of the neighborhood children while their parents worked. Her generous spirit, pleasing personality, influence and great wisdom shall forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. She was predeceased by 11 siblings of which she was the baby girl.

Her memory will be cherished by her daughters, Shirley Cutler, Montclair, NJ and Natalie McClinton Berry, a son-in-law, Orlando Berry both of Florence, SC. Four Grandchildren, William China Jr. Norwalk Ct, Christina Hood, Florence, SC, Karen Hood, Wilkes Barre, Pa and Corey Hall Mullins, SC. Eight Great grandchildren, Zhanejah Hood, Florence, SC, Najese Hood, Charlotte, NC, Nyaira and Da’Vae Williams both of Wilkes Barre, Pa. Zhynaya China, Norwalk, CT, Nadira China and Jamir Messiah China both of Norwalk, Ct. One great great granddaughter, Laylani Vega Hood, Wilkes Barre, Pa. Two Sister-in-laws Mattie Mae Heyward, Newark, Delaware and Mary Dunn, Youngsville, NC. One Godson, Milton Taylor, Clearwater, Fl. A host of devoted Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. Lifelong Best friend Francine Williams. Special Friends Francis Cheek, Delaware and Kimberly Cheek, Texas. A host of other devoted friends.
