Obituary for Delroy Fritzpatrick Smith

Delroy Fritzpatrick Smith was born on June 3, 1923 to the late Simon Smith and Estella Martin in Mason Hall, Saint Mary’s Parrish, Jamaica, W.I. Mr. Smith, affectionately known as Smitty, attended the Mason Hall Primary School System in Port Maria, Saint Mary. He migrated to New York in 1948 and began his career with Park Davis Pharmaceuticals in Morris Plains, NJ. He ultimately progressed to Granulation Manager and retired after 35 years of service when the company changed over to Warren and Lambert. On November 26, 1960, Delroy married the love of his life, Ruby L. Speaks, and they raised 4 beautiful daughters.

The stature of a man is truly how well he is honored and esteemed by family and friends. Smitty had an affinity for Jazz music and fellowship with family and friends. He loved to entertain and spent time deep-sea fishing and ice fishing. They would catch, clean, and cook the fish, and from that, many meals were prepared with love. Delroy was a car enthusiast. He enjoyed taking his grandsons to the annual car show in NYC. He was a man of action and movement. Amongst a few of his activities were racquetball, softball, long walks, and playing dominos. He and his friends maintained a brotherhood of men bonded by fun loving fellowship. Smitty believed in education and he guided his family to reach their fullest potential. He loved spending time with his grandchildren; he was a present fathera dn his presence was strong in their lives, a very good listener and gave good advice. He always looked impeccable and well dressed.

Smitty helped many people in the community, no matter their status. If you were down or in need, he would help with an encouraging word and actions to back it up. He participated in the Gardening committee and block association. Smitty was a strong supporter of the Ebonettes Woman’s Club where he and the late Jimmy Little were the only two male honorary members.

Smitty was predeceased by his daughter, Carol Speaks, as well as his brothers Beswick and Victor Martin.

Delroy Smith leaves to cherish his rich legacy; his loving wife of 58 years, Ruby L. Smith; three Daughters: Dorothy Roberts (Selwyn), Kendall Smith-McCombs (David), and Melissa Smith-Withers; Grandchildren: Carlos, Shelley, Monique, Sheldon, Sakeena, David Jr., Maya, Haki, Brandon, and Naja; 11 Great-Grandchildren: 2 Sisters: Dorothy Martin and Lena Murphy; dear friends Carl Sewell and Tony Jackson, whom he loved as a son; along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends.
