Obituary for Evangeline Pride

She was born on December 7, 1922 in Buckingham, VA to her father, Abraham Pride, and mother Rosa Johnson Pride. To most of her family, she was affectionately known as Aunt Dot.

As an adult, Evangeline went on to establish a life in Newark, NJ where she raised her family. In her spare time, she loved spending time with each of her siblings and their families. When she wasn’t with her family, she was spending time with her good friends like Mr. & Mrs. Thompson, Ms. Ruth, Ms. Ann, Ms. Lucy, and Ms. Gail, just to name a few.

Evangeline loved to cook. She would happily supply requests for her famous lemon meringue and apple pies and chocolate cake.

She was a woman of faith and loved her gospel music. In earlier years, Evangeline attended the Deliverance Evangelistic Center on Central Avenue in Newark, NJ which was led by Apostle Arturo Skinner. Some of her favorite gospel songs included Noways tired by Reverend James Cleveland and Rough Side Of The Mountain by F.C. Barnes & Company and she would often attend the various gospel concerts at Hopewell Baptist Church, Newark Symphony Hall and other venues.

Evangeline was preceded in death by her son Bruce and her 12 siblings - Betty, Charles, Chanie, Eddie “Burl”, Gloria Estelle, Henry, Amanda "Mandie", Patsy, Samuel, Rogers, Turner “Pete”, and William.

She is survived by her children, James Pride and Linda Muhammad; four grandchildren, Evangelina, Hasan (Nicole), Kasim and Rashid (Keisha); 10 great-grandchildren, Zion, Justin, Nicholas, Aliyah, Zimbreah, Aaron, Kairida, Janiyah, Amirah and Jaylin, one adopted great-granddaughter, Linda; and a host of loving nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to name.

Evangeline has left an indelible mark on countless lives and they, too, celebrate her life with the family.
