Obituary for Gary Simpkins

Gary J. Simpkins was born on March 11, 1955 to Allen and Janet Simpkins. Gary was the third child of five. Gary was an energetic and often at time mischievous child who excelled both in academics and athletics. He matriculated through Orange High School, graduating in 1973. It was during those early years that he met the love of his life, Veronique Sewell. He would later write that he knew at the tender age of 15 that he would love and marry her.

Gary went on to attend Delaware State College, where he majored in Sociology. While at DSC, Gary had the opportunity to spread his acting wings, starring in several stage plays. Additionally, Gary was an active member of the Sociology Club where he not only tutored but was honored by the Department. Gary graduated proudly in May 1979.

Gary married the love of his life, Veronique, in February 1984 before a host of family and friends. Their union brought two children, Ginnene Jacqueline and James Isaac. In 2011, Gary joined the New Hope Baptist Church family where he worshipped until he was unable to attend. Gary is best known for his sense of humor, love of sports, and just being Simp, Joe Rock, or Gary. He gave love, he was loved, and will be remembered in love.

Gary leaves to celebrate his full life his mother, Janet, his wife, Veronique, his children, Ginnene J. Simpkins and James I. Simpkins, a brother, Hal J. Simpkins (Ruvinia), four grandchildren, Naima S. Palmer (Shante), Jordan J. and Jason M. Rosenbaum (Rashaan), and King J.R. Simpkins (Katie), 10 nieces and nephews, 25 great nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins and “adopted” brothers. In addition to his father, Allen L. Simpkins, Jr., Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Allen L. Simpkins III, and sisters, Shelley J. Simpkins-Guirand and Kim I. Simpkins-Jones.
