Obituary for Grace Rogers

Grace Rogers (nee Daniels) was born on March 5, 1924 to
Gussie Daniels and Clyde Daniels in Eufaula, Alabama.
Grace’s beginnings were very humble. Her mother’s
employer named her, and Grace credits the name for
guiding her life to one of grace, kindness and selflessness.
The family struggled mightily as Gussie reared her kid
brother Walter and her children Grace and James. When
Grace was young, her uncle Herman brought the family to
Newark, New Jersey. This was a major turning point in her
life. She attended Oliver Street School and Eastside High
School. John Oliver Rogers wooed her and she dropped out
of school to marry him when he was drafted into the army.
Judy was born two years later. Grace and Judy moved in with extended family while
John served in the Philippines in WWII. John Jr. was born after his return and the
family moved to East Orange. Grace found work at Beardsley & Sons factory and
later at Westinghouse where she worked for over thirty years and where she made
lifelong friends of different ages and races. There was Nancy, a young Italian girl, a
struggling single mother. Naomi and Gloria were young black girls who benefited
from her mentoring. Her friendship with Maurice led to many years working with her
in her catering business. After retirement she volunteered at St. Michael’s Hospital
assisting the nurses with boarder babies born during the crack epidemic. She and a
former colleague knitted many dolls and blankets for them.
Grace was a phenomenal mother. She filled her children with high expectations and
supported them in all their endeavors, sacrificing her needs to make sure their needs
were met. She attended school activities and Cub Scout ceremonies. She was a fierce
advocate if anyone at school mistreated her children. She was a loving grandmother
who nurtured her grandchildren - Kimani, Jamal, and Alicia. She babysat for her
great-grandchildren - Amina and Moses. She enjoyed her youngest, Miles, who was
born when she was 90 years old. She was a proud grandmother who celebrated all of
their achievements and was intimately involved in their lives through adulthood. If
you visited her, you would have thought she had 50 grand- and great-grandchildren
there were so many photos.
Grace was a strong, independent woman who emerged from a birth of abject poverty
to a goal-directed life of service and kindness. She and her husband bought a house,
put both children through college, made her home a refuge for those in need and
was a faithful servant to her beloved church, Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she
was a member for 68 years. She was honored for her service by Church Women
Grace was loved by many, admired by most and held in high regard by all. Many have
benefited from her kindness and beneficence. In addition to her friends at
Westinghouse, she had a wide network of close friends who came into her life at
different stages. She has outlived most of them. She felt their loss deeply and often
talked about being “the last leaf on the tree.” Grace has certainly joined the
heavenly saints.
Her husband John and her brother James predeceased her. Grace leaves to mourn her
daughter Judy, son John (Muriel); grandchildren Kimani (Jennie), Jamal and, Alicia;
great-grandchildren Amina, Moses, and Miles; children of the heart - Amy, Barbara,
and Richard; nieces, nephews, and other relatives; and a host of family and friends.
