Obituary for Hopeton Harris Kerr

Hopeton Harris Kerr affectionately known as “Uncle Hopie” went from labor to
reward on May 2, 2019 at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ.
Hopeton was born on May 10, 1946 to Lucille Kerr and the late Edwin Kerr in
Tangle River, St. James, Jamaica, WI. He was the 7th of 10 children. He was the
beloved of his father and was always by his side. Hopeton was educated through the
Vaughnville All Age School and went to trade school to become a skilled craftsman
and carpenter. His first job was a casket maker for Madden Funeral Home and he
also did carpentry work.
In 1976, Hopeton became friends with a man named Wesley and through their
friendship, Hopeton was introduced to the love of his life – Adlyn. After many bike
rides and long walks on the beach, Hopeton and Adlyn were married in June of 1977.
Out of this union, they were blessed with three children – Otis, Amelia and Everton.
Hopeton was doubly blessed because he became a father to Adlyn’s older children –
Lawrence, Lovetta and Milton.
Hopeton was a quiet man that worked hard. Wanting to make a better life for his
family, Hopeton decided to come to the United States in October of 1977. He came
and lived with his sister Minerva for several years. Hopeton continued his work with
carpentry and became a sanitation worker. He sent for his family in 1982. They
arrived and finally took up residence at “42” in Montclair, NJ.
Hopeton accepted Christ and was saved at a young age and was one of the foundation
members of First Fellowship Cathedral. He was a member of the Deacon and Trustee
Board there and always had a mind to work in the church. He not only helped to build
the church but is credited with building the balcony that sits above our heads.
Hopeton loved his family and got great joy out of his grandchildren.
Hopeton was predeceased by his father, Edwin; his brothers, Rainville and Lloyd
and his sister Alma.
He leaves to cherish her memory, his mother, Lucille, his wife, Adlyn; his children –
