Obituary for Jesse Payton

Jesse James Payton, Sr. was born on April 30, 1933 in Pitt County, North Carolina to the late Ben Warren and Armissie Payton. He departed this world peacefully on November 22, 2019.
At the age of 20, Jesse entered the U.S. Army and served with the famed 351st Regimental Combat Team overseas in Italy. It was while he was on active duty with the Army and on furlough in Washington, District of Columbia (D.C.) that he met his lovely wife to be, Virgie Demory. Jesse and Virgie were married in Washington, D.C. in 1955.
Eventually they left Washington, D.C. moving to New Jersey. Through hard work and discipline, Jesse and Virgie continue to find employment of increasing responsibility. Eventually they would open their own business, Magnolia Sea Food Market.
For over 50 years, Jesse and his wife owned and operated the landmark business, Magnolia Seafood Market, one of the first and longest existing Black-owed businesses in Elizabeth. N.J. He not only took pride in his business, but truly relished the friends he made during his time in business. In 2005, he received the Entrepreneur Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in recognition for providing many years of service to the Elizabeth community. Jesse was a skilled craftsman and he spent many hours building up his business and household.
Jesse was a longtime member and Trustee of the Greater Holy Tabernacle United Holy Church in Elizabeth, N.J. Jesse's business knowledge was frequently called upon to help in church financial matters.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 64 years Virgie, his two sons, Jessie Payton Jr (Carol), and Craig Payton. His daughters Diane Salters (Jerome), Gail Payton and Tricia Johnson (Bennie). His five grandchildren: Kevin Nash, Keith Nash, Jesse III, Alexander Payton and Jonnaye Johnson, and a host of relatives and close friends.
Jesse leaves to those who knew him best fond and cherished memories.
A funeral service will be held on November 29, 2019 at the Greater Holy Tabernacle United Holy Church, Elizabeth, N.J.
