Obituary for Martina Williams

Martina E. Williams was born January 15th, 1943 in Louisville, KY to Ann C. Ellis and Stephen Garrett both who have preceded her in death.

Martina moved to New Jersey at the age of 4 due to her mother’s illness and was raised by her aunt Bertha Spruiell who has preceded her in death.

She attended Lincoln Avenue Elementary School in Orange, New Jersey prior to moving to East Orange, New Jersey where she attended Vernon L. Davey Jr Middle School and East Orange High School. She also attended both Essex County College and New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, NJ.

Martina married the late Harry A. Williams at a young age and from that union had two children.

At a an early age she also began her work history first being employed at Fire Insurance Company located in Newark NJ, then on the Total Employment & Manpower and the City Hall Recreation Department.

In 1975, Martina employment at Westinghouse Electric Corp, located in Bloomfield, NJ now knowns as Philips Lighting Company in Somerset, NJ where she excelled in all endeavors and retired in 2011 after 37 years of service.

Martina became a member of St. Matthew AME church in 1992 and found her passion in serving as an Usher and Missionary that which she loved. From her own humble beginnings, she found a joy and passion for helping others and had continued this practice throughout her lifetime through charitable donations to various organizations. She continued her spiritual journey with joining Bethel AME Church, located in Vauxhall, New Jersey in 2015 under the guidance and leadership of Reverend Dennis Hughes. Martina loved life and loved the Lord.

Martina leaves to mourn her daughter Tonja L. Jones (Norfolk VA), five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, Brother Edward Abernathy (Linden, NJ), and a host of Nieces, Nephews and Friends. Martina is also preceded in death by her son Harry (Eugene) Williams and beloved cousin James English (Bloomfield, NJ).
