Obituary for Robert James, Jr.

Robert James, Jr. 51, of Cresco, PA, made his transition to be with the Lord on
Tuesday, July 23, 2019 near his home in Pennsylvania. Born November 3,
1967 in Newark, Robert was the son of John Robert James and Carolyn A.
James.
Robert attended East Orange public schools and graduated from Clifford J.
Scott High School in 1986. He loved playing all sports as a child, but his true
passion was basketball. Lots of time was spent playing ball at Columbian Park
in East Orange. During high school, Robert was an elite player and was named
to the All-State, All-County and All-Orange boys basketball teams. Rob
received Worrall Publications Player of the Year award.
On the hardwood courts of Clifford Scott, “Rob J” as he was affectionately
called, made his mark. He was a point guard in the truest sense, and he
competed at a high level with style dishing out dimes with pin-point
accuracy at a fast paced. Always confident, but not cocky. Teammates loved
to play with Rob because of his tenacity and unselfish play. He made
everybody better by getting them the ball in the right places at the right time.
His fast breaks were a thing of beauty. In the open court, he was a master at
work. His skills and creativity were always on full display. There were many
great performances, but the most memorable came against a rival team in
1985. After a time out and with just seven seconds left on the clock, Rob
found himself with the ball and he embraced the moment. After thwarting a
near steal, Rob lost his defender and as he crossed half court he pulled up and
launched a shot as the clock ticked away and hit nothing but net. It was
magical!
After high school, Robert attended Monmouth University on a basketball
scholarship, transferring to Kean College after one season where he continued
his outstanding play. At the collegiate level, Rob averaged 13.5 assists per
game and ended the 1989 season with 391 assists. In one game against
Montclair State, Rob recorded 24 assists, a feat which landed him in the
Guinness Book of World Records for most assist in a single game.
In December 1997, Robert welcomed his beautiful baby girl Jeniya into the
world and loved being a dad. Robert met the love of his life Kimberle’
Diamond White in 2001 and the two were married on September 24, 2004.
One year later the Rob, Kim and their two boys Davelle and Chezre’ relocated
to Pennsylvania. Robert enjoyed spending his time with Kim and the two
would often travel. Rob was always proud to announce that Kim was his
beautiful wife, his Diamond. His love for her was unbreakable and one of a
kind. Rob embraced the role of husband, father and head of his family. For
that, he was truly respected and loved. Robert was employed with FedEx in
Tobyhanna, Pa where he was a supervisor for 11 years. At the time of his
transition, he was employed with Neovia Logistics and Distribution, Inc. as a
supervisor. “RJ” as everyone called him, was fair, firm, consistent and most
importantly, easy to work with.
Robert was an avid sports fan. Everyone knew his favorite football team
was the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rob and Kim attended Steeler games and on
Sundays while at home he watched them play in his man cave. Rob
enjoyed talking with childhood friends Tom Purcell, Ray Farrar, Shawn
Williams on the phone for hours on Sundays. Rob touched the lives of
everyone he met. He remembered every special occasion and was sure to
call or text friends on birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Rob also
loved house music. He would often spend hours over the phone battling
with his brother in-law Malik over who had the best house music
collection.
Being with friends was special to Rob. He loved to play cards, especially
spades. He could talk trash with his spades partner Shawn Williams as
the two would take on anyone. A true friend and man of high character,
Rob J will be missed.
Robert leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Kimberle’ whom he
adored; his beautiful daughter Jeniya James whom he cherished; two
handsome sons Davelle and Chezre’ Byrd who made him proud, his
mother, Carol James of East Orange; his father John, Robert James of
Orange; grandmother Ella Harding, father-in-law Thomas White Jr; two
sisters, Michele James and Ebony Kelly; four brothers Harold Gray,
Duprey Kelly, Anthony Kelly, and Kenyon Hardy; two grandchildren
Milani and Myla Byrd, whom he treasured; one godchild Naheem
Harper, for whom he always made time; step-children Robert and
Jenisia Vining; eight nieces and nephews; three sisters-in-law, four
brothers-in-law, and a host of relatives and great friends.
