Obituary for Seldon Jesse Chiles

Fondly known as "Chico," Seldon Jesse Chiles departed this earthly life on March 31, 2020. He was born June 10, 1938, to Dorothy N. Chiles (Cowan) and Archine N. Chiles, the middle child (and predeceased by) little sister, Dorothy Couch, and big brother, Archie Chiles.
Seldon spent elementary years at Eastern School in East Orange, N.J., before going on to excel at many sports including football, basketball and baseball at EOHS. Before graduating in 1957, he proudly held school records and ended up being awarded a full scholarship to attend Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina.
At JCS, he continued his love of sports and also met and later married Sandra J. Rennick. They were married in Baltimore, Md., moved to New Jersey and during their eight-year marriage, and had a child, Michele Chiles-Hickman.
Although he did not want to go, he dutifully served in the Army from December 1961 to August 1963. Upon his return, Seldon played softball with the popular Dr. D's team from 1963 to 1988, where he had the opportunity to travel to almost all 50 states and Canada - an experience he talked about until his last days.
Many remember him as a savvy businessman, and he used that skill as the first African American salesman at Gallo Wine Distributors, where he called on clients like Tremont Lounge in East Orange and many others for decades.
He will be remembered for his witty and often sharp humor, his great sports ability, and the charisma he brought to every space.
He is survived by his only daughter, Michele (Stan); grandchildren, Brittany Chiles, Emery, Marissa and Camille Hickman; niece and nephew, April Patterson and Antony Chiles, and many cousins, childhood friends, and more recent neighbors at New Community.
