Obituary for Hilary Person Newell

Hilary Person Newell was born on December 17, 1930, in Orange, New Jersey to Sarah
Romie (Person) and Jesse James Newell. He entered into eternal rest on Tuesday,
May 5, 2020 at his residence in East Orange, New Jersey.

“Hil” affectionally known as “Brother” by his siblings, graduated in 1949 from the former
South Side High School (now Malcolm X Shabazz), in Newark, NJ.Mr. Newell served his country honorably with over 20 years between the Air Force and the Army, respectively. Initially, Hilary enlisted in the Air Force in 1949 during which time he served in the Korean conflict. Later he enlisted in the Army and served a double tour of duty during the Vietnam War. Staff Sergeant Newell’s last assignment was as an electronics specialist. He was honorably discharged on August 31, 1972.

In 1967, he was married to the late Mildred Veronica Burton and to this union, one son,
Hilary Person Newell II was born.

After retiring from the Army, he worked at Monroe and Litton Industries in Orange, New
Jersey manufacturing microchips for computers. In his free time, Hil enjoyed playing
pinochle with his sisters, watching westerns and black and white movies, working daily
crossword puzzles, watching “Jeopardy”, and reading novels by his favorite authors,
James Patterson and Stephen King.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters: Jessie Elaine Mason
(Roland) and Norene Rebecca Bass (Sefton).He leaves to cherish his life, one son, Hilary Person Newell II (Jamelle) of Atlanta, GA;one grandson, Jaydin Newell; one brother, Joseph Louis Newell (Nina) of Beltsville, MD;three nieces: Jacqueline Williams of Laurel, MD; Michelle Boyer, of East Orange, NJ;and Karenina Newell Scott (Ronnie) of College Park, MD; two nephews: Sefton Bass,Jr. of Plainfield, NJ and Brian Newell of Washington, DC and a host of great nieces,nephews, cousins and friends.

Special thank-you to his devoted niece, Michelle Boyer whose love and care showed no
bounds when it came to her beloved Uncle.
